Snake Evolution — First Devlog!

Hi everyone!
Today I’m excited to share the first official devlog for Snake Evolution, my modern twist on the classic Snake game. This project started as a simple idea, but it quickly grew into something much bigger — new mechanics, evolving gameplay, and a unique style that sets it apart.
A big part of my inspiration actually comes from my love of history, archaeology, paleontology, and science. I’ve always been fascinated by how life evolves, adapts, and changes across time — from ancient organisms to modern ecosystems. That curiosity pushed me to experiment creatively and even use AI tools to bring this game to life.
AI didn’t do the work for me—it helped me go further, faster, imagining more vivid eras, better-animated creatures, and a coherent historical progression.
Snake Evolutionary wasn’t born from just a simple retro game upgrade—it was born from a deep passion for history, archaeology, paleontology, and, more broadly, the sciences of evolution. Fascinated for years by the origins of life, mass extinctions, ancient civilizations, and scientific progress, I wanted to create a game that could take players on a journey across 4.6 billion years, while remaining as fun and accessible as a classic Snake game.
The result: a Snake game that tells the story of Earth’s evolution, its lifeforms… and humanity.

Let’s dive in!
Why I Created the Game
I created Snake Evolution out of a fascination with the history of life, archaeology, and the sciences of evolution. I wanted to make a game that could take players on a journey through 4.6 billion years of Earth’s history, from the earliest single-celled organisms to the rise of humans, while keeping the fun and accessibility of a classic Snake game. It’s a way to combine scientific curiosity with gameplay, letting players experience evolution in a hands-on, interactive way.
Early Design Decisions
From the beginning, the focus was on balancing historical accuracy and playability. I chose to:
-
Include creatures and environments authentic to each era,
-
Add cultural and natural objects inspired by real archaeological and paleontological discoveries,
-
Keep the classic Snake mechanics simple, so players of all ages could enjoy the game while exploring complex evolutionary concepts.
Artificial intelligence helped accelerate prototyping and design, generating early creature concepts and environmental layouts, but every element was refined manually to ensure coherence and quality.
What Makes Snake Evolution Different
Snake Evolution is not just a retro Snake remake. Its uniqueness comes from:
-
Historical progression: Each level represents a specific geological or cultural era, with environments and creatures evolving realistically.
-
Scientific grounding: Creatures, objects, and events are inspired by actual discoveries.
-
Dynamic evolution mechanics: The snake itself evolves as the game progresses, reflecting the changing nature of life over billions of years.
It’s an educational experience wrapped in an addictive, familiar gameplay loop.
Graphic elements : Are generated via Code
- New Power-Ups:
- Girth: Increase your snake’s thickness to collect food more easily.
- Split: Divide your snake into two and keep eating with both simultaneously.
- Magnet: Attract nearby food automatically.
- Shield: Pass through obstacles safely.
- Ghost: Move through walls without dying.
What’s Planned Next
The roadmap includes:
-
Adding more eras, creatures, and interactive objects,
-
Enhancing animations and visual details for a more immersive experience,
-
Exploring additional mechanics that highlight evolutionary or cultural milestones,
-
Expanding accessibility options and difficulty modes to reach more players.
